Bolivian Baroque

  • California Jazz Conservatory (map)

In the 1700’s, what is now Paraguay, eastern Bolivian and southern Brazil, was a vast jungle of semi-nomadic people surrounded by the Spanish and Portuguese empires. The Jesuits entered the jungle with the goal of converting the natives to christianity and sheltering them from enslavement. In the process, they brought their music and instruments with them, setting in motion the birth of Bolivian Baroque Music.
